Jamie Oliver’s Restaurant YES to food intolerance and allergies

Jamie Oliver Restaurant in Nottingham

It’s not often that I say this, but I think I’ve found quite possible one of the best catering for free from restaurants in the UK.  I recently went to Jamies restaurant in Nottingham owned by famous chef Jamie Oliver.  Now as much as I’d like to say that I love eating out, it’s been a long time since I’ve entered an establishment and felt 100% comfortable from the moment I walked in through to the duration and ending of my meal.  I’m used to a little bit of fear, which always keeps me on my toes.  This is primarily because despite saying so, not many establishments really understand free from consumers.  Now I’m no simple free from consumer myself so I understand that it’s not easy for restaurants to always cater for the 1 in a million customer like myself.  I’m all wheat, gluten, dairy and soya free. I also can not tolerate sugar very well so I know that I’m not your typical consumer.  I tend to face my eating out experience with as much a positive attitude as possible.  Where possible I call ahead and inform the restaurant and get as much information as possible.  I also have the motto that no matter where I go, there is sure to be something on the menu that I can eat even if it is just a jacket potato.  This attitude stops me from getting down and feeling sorry for myself.

So I rang up the Jamie Oliver’s restaurant to find a friendly voice on the other end. I mentioned my intolerances and was told not to worry and that my waiter on the day would run through everything with me.  I was assured.  The day came and I put on my best frock. Well one of them anyway. I was going to a meal where we were celebrating a 45th wedding anniversary.  When we arrived, we were sat in a lovely private room, our waiter ran through the menu with me noting down what I couldn’t eat and running through with me what was suitable for my needs. I was able to order so many things on the menu, I was blown way. Looking round the table of 7 of us, my starter and main was the same as 3 others on the table.  I’m used to having different meals with things taken out, so thus was a big tick. I had a delicious vegetable plank for my starter (Seasonal vegetables, crunchy salad and more.) and the Flash grilled feathered steak for my main (Pounded beef with sage and prosciutto with a spicy tomato salsa) the food was divine! It’s lovely having tasty food seasoned well and so fresh tasting with lovely aroma too.  When you’re eating out, it’s meant to be a full experience, great food, service and atmosphere.

I personally have to give this restaurant 10 out of 10 on all levels. They looked after me and made me feel welcome, food intolerances and all. I’ll be back again, it won’t just be for special occasions either as the food was well priced and that flavour, taste and service is worth paying for. I highly recommend this restaurant to any customer, whether you’re a free from person with allergies, intolerances or you can eat anything. I can’t wait for my next visit. Definitely one of my new favourites places. :-)

The book has a lot of good info in it as to how to cook and live gluten free. However the book does not mark in the ricepes which items you need to make sure are gluten free (it notes early in the book that there are some items that you will need to make sure are gluten free, the other GF cooling books i have bought and used have marked every item in the ingredients list. It is a good starting point, and the BBQ meat loaf (page 210 if i recall correctly) is AMAZING, but the other ricepes in the book i have tried so far have been pretty bland, maybe i just so far have chosen the wrong ones but compared to the other GF cook books ive used this has a much lower percentage of great ricepes -matt
