Sulphite Free

Sulphites have been used in foods and drinks since Roman times for their preservation properties – foods takes a lot longer to go off with sulphites added.

In a few rare individuals, about 2% of the population (though about 10% of asthmatics), an allergic reaction can be triggered by consumption of foods containing sulphites, usually through the sulphite interacting with stomach acid. It is for this reason that most medicines containing sulphites are non-reactive, except for oral medication which can trigger a reaction. Sulphites are also commonly found in cosmetics, but like medications, these are rarely a threat to sensitive individuals.

Common food types that contain sulphites include:

  • bakery goods
  • soup mixes
  • jams
  • canned vegetables
  • pickled foods and vinegar
  • gravies
  • dried fruit
  • potato crisps
  • beer, wine and cider
  • vegetable juices
  • sparkling grape juice
  • bottled lemon juice and lime juice
  • tea
  • many condiments (bottled sauces etc.)
  • molasses
  • fresh or frozen prawns
  • guacamole
  • maraschino cherries
  • dehydrated, pre-cut or peeled potatoes
