My bulk buying free from habit

Written by Bunmi. Thursday, January 12th, 2012

Over night I found myself thinking about my food shopping habits. I’ve noticed even till this day (I’ve been shopping free from for over 6 years now) that I totally bulk buy foods. (What’s that all about?) When I say that I bulk buy, I only bulk buy free from products.

I see my favorite products on the shelves and I get excited. Last night for example, I walked into Tesco thinking to myself “they won’t have any gluten free bread left now!’ I found myself walking really fast to the aisle and was pleased to see 3 loaves of Genius Gluten Free seeded bread left on the shelf. I was shocked!!!genius-multiseeded-bread_1310630534

Before I knew it, my hand had placed all 3 in my basket. I found myself thinking “Well I don’t know if there will be any when I come next time.” I was blatantly trying to justify the purchase. The funny thing is, I knew I wouldn’t even have enough room in the freezer to keep them all but still I wanted them. ☺ (I freeze when I bulk buy you see. ☺)

I know how rubbish it is for a free from (er) to get to the free from aisle and either see that their favourite food no longer exists or that the stock has run out. So I was sure to leave a loaf on the shelf (There was one white and one brown on the shelf.) and to leave the rolls that I also wanted on the shelf too. I found myself visualizing the next customer getting to the free from area and being happy to see some bread on the shelves. Happy days ☺

So I’ve been thinking more and more about why I bulk buy and having spoken to other free from customers, it’s not just because of the fact that food used to be limited, I’m talking 5 years to 20, 30 years ago. It also just seems as though despite the demand from customers, there just isn’t enough products on the shelves. FACT!!!
Variety has increased but volume doesn’t seem to match the demand. I’m not sure what the reason is, but I really hope that this changes soon. I know from talking to many of you that you’re just as frustrated about the lack of availability and that’s the reason why so many of us are baking, cooking our own products. Why should we be so different though? Why can other foods be purchased without fail? Why should we feel the need to bulk buy?

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this, so please feel free to comment below. I look forward to hearing your thoughts. :-)

The book has a lot of good info in it as to how to cook and live gluten free. However the book does not mark in the receips which items you need to make sure are gluten free (it notes early in the book that there are some items that you will need to make sure are gluten free, the other GF cooling books i have bought and used have marked every item in the ingredients list. It is a good starting point, and the BBQ meat loaf (page 210 if i recall correctly) is AMAZING, but the other receips in the book i have tried so far have been pretty bland, maybe i just so far have chosen the wrong ones but compared to the other GF cook books ive used this has a much lower percentage of great receips -matt
